Our contribution

Bringing safe water closer to home

MSF works to improve water quality, reduce pollution, and eliminate open defecation, while supporting equitable access to safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene for households, schools, and health facilities. We also help manage freshwater ecosystems and encourage community participation in improving water and sanitation, aiming to cut the toll of water-borne disease.

Water is the first link in every chain

Without safe water and basic sanitation, health, education, and livelihoods all suffer at once — water-borne illness keeps children out of school, strains household budgets, and falls hardest on women and girls who often carry the burden of fetching water.

MSF's work here connects directly to our other programmes: schools we build get access to clean water, and disaster-hit communities receive sanitation support alongside emergency relief.

Our Contribution

Clean water and sanitation ensures availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. It focuses on improving water quality, reducing pollution, eliminating open defecation, achieving equitable access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene for households, schools and health facilities, managing freshwater ecosystems and supporting community participation in improving water and sanitation management. The goal is to reduce mortality and impact of water-borne diseases.
